    A FILM EVENING of one of the earlier James Bond films made in 1969 was held on the 8th March, 2017, in Monte Estoril. Much of this thriller was filmed in Portugal and Members present recognized the majority of the locations. Eye-witness anecdotes from one of the local ‘extras’ from nearly 50 year ago were shared at the beginning, which shed light on the inner workings of the filming experience.  Cheese and wine were served beforehand, together with an optional ‘finger supper’ afterwards.

    The Annual Lunch was held on January 21st  at the Clube Dom Carlos in Areia, followed by a fascinating talk by Gerald Luckhurst on “Gerard de Visme: 1755 and all that came afterwards”.

    Film evening at the Oporto Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club on February 23rd  of the BBC film “Great Train Journeys in Spain and Portugal”, narrated by Michael Portillo.

    On Saturday, 16th July the BHS had a guided visit to the Portuguese Air Force Museum at Air Force Base 1, Granja do Marqûes, Sintra followed by the annual picnic hosted by our Chairman and his wife, Clive and Emma Gilbert at their home in Colares, Sintra.

    On one of the hottest July days of the year (34º C in Lisbon) the British Historical Society drove up into the cool Sintra hills to enjoy a picnic lunch in the grounds of the Chalet of the Condessa d’Edla.  And who was this Victorian-era Countess?  Well, thereby hangs a really romantic tale.
